Watches and Status

Why do you wear a watch? Is it because you want clear and regular access to time? Is it because it looks nice? Or perhaps it’s a family heirloom that’s been passed down between generations, and you’re now the lucky recipient on the family totem pole?

Regardless of our reasons, wearing a watch is a symbol of status. Watches make us feel good and look good. Say you’re a hard-working business owner, and you’re well on your way to making a substantial income. You don’t want your money to just sit in a bank all day where it can earn a staggering 0.01% interest rate increase per year. Oh no! You’re ready to make some serious investments and see your salary really grow in the time to come, but the only way to do that is by sitting down with a financial planner… So you make an appointment with someone who claims he can help you. The meeting comes along, he reaches out to shake your hand, and you notice the Rolex Submariner wrapped tightly around his wrist. Right away, you think this is a man who knows what he’s talking about. Someone who can afford a luxury item like this must be a financial genius, and he’s likely to pass some of that million-dollar knowledge on to you. He probably knows where and when to invest, and more importantly, how to invest, and in the next five to ten years, with his help, you’ll be able to retire and spend the rest of your life traveling, sailing yachts and dining in 5-star restaurants.

In many ways, a watch says a lot about a person. Are they tough and heavy-handed? Are they practical? What kind of job do they have? Watches are designed to tell time, not fortunes, and yet simply wearing one can make you appear flashy, successful and introspective. Like portals to the soul, watches tell us a lot about their owners.

Remember going to school every day as a kid and thinking the chances of anything out of the ordinary occurring were pretty slim? Not much outside the realms of basic math and spelling happened between the hours of eight and two. Then one intricate morning comes along when a classmate arrives with a rubber sports watch locked around his arm. Suddenly, everyone’s eager to know more. All day, you and your fellow students are asking him what time it is, but what’s odd is that there’s a clock on the wall! If everyone’s so eager to know the hour, all they’d have to do is look up! But they’d rather ask little Johnny, and get a direct and “personalized” answer…

Let’s face it. You’re not asking because you’re interested in time. What you want is to get to the heart of the situation. What was it that garnered little Johnny his newfound watch in the first place? Was it his birthday? Some holiday you forgot about where gift-giving was in store? Did he get all A’s or do something really good in life, and this new timepiece is his special prize? In other words, what makes Johnny so special that he now bears the right to wear a watch?

The answer is nothing. Owning and wearing a watch is a liberty we can all possess. Whether it’s a Tag Heuer, a Montblanc or a Baume & Mercier, the right watch is out there to give you an aura of class and sophistication that’s hard to obtain through anything else, and much like shopping for a car, buying a watch can be a unique and invigorating experience. When you’re ready, there’s a special one out that there that will call specifically to you, and if you hear that call, your watch can earn you the attention, appeal and respect you undoubtedly deserve.
