In mid-November, Longines premiered a new, highly anticipated Longines Heritage Avigation BigEye L2.816.4.53.2 timepiece at the at the annual WatchTime 2017 event. The Longines Heritage collection is continuously expanding to include a greater variety of vintage-inspired timepieces that pay tribute to the 185 year history of the brand.
The Longines Heritage Avigation is a modern re-issue of a chronograph that was produced in the 1930s, the Avigation BigEye. “Avigation” is named after the two main functions the watch serves: aviation and navigation. The new timepiece brings back the oversized minute counter, the origin of its namesake.
This modern timepiece is features an easily legible black dial encased under domed sapphire crystal with large Arabic numerals, as well as an extra-large 30-minute chronograph counter at 3 o’clock. The timepiece is also equipped with a 12-hour counter at 6 o’clock and a sub dial for running seconds at 9 o’clock. The central hand counts the chronograph seconds. The hour and minute hands, like the numerals, are coated with Super-LumiNova luminescence. Unlike many Longines Heritage models, the Avignation BigEye does not have a date feature; the sub dials and numerals attractively fill the space on the dial with seamless elegance.

The 41mm stainless steel case features two prominent chronograph pushers for easy handling. It is affixed to a brown calfskin leather strap with contrasting stitching to complete the vintage-aviation look. This timepiece is powered by the self-winding Longines proprietary chronograph movement, the Calibre L688, which boasts a 54-hour power reserve and column-wheel chronograph control.
